DAVID STRATHAIRN ONLINE
AN ONLINE DEDICATION TO ACTOR DAVID STRATHAIRN
On behalf of DAVID STRATHAIRN ONLINE I’d like to wish David a very happy birthday. He turns a very vital 73 today and it’s my sincere hope he is having a great time with family and friends.
I wanted to let you know I’ve migrated the site over to the previous domain. Why? A while back I lost the domain of DAVIDSTRATHAIRN.ORG and had to buy another to replace it so I could get the site back up and running. It took a bit for me to finally be able to purchase the old domain back as it finally came on the market for the same price I bought it. Please make sure you update your bookmarks and follow the site at this domain. Thank you for your understanding. Please take care and be safe in these troubling times. All my best to you.
The trailer has been released for David’s film WALKAWAY JOE. It co-stars The Walking Dead‘s Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Looks like it’s going to be good and that David is getting special mention, all good.
WALKAWAY JOE Trailer: Keep Your Eye on David Strathairn
David Strathairn instantly makes anything in which he appears more interesting, merely by his always dramatic presence.
His appears in Walkaway Joe, about halfway through a new trailer, and elevates what looks like a somewhat rudimentary father/son drama. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays the father, and he’s certainly a combustible personality who can create dramatic sparks, while Julian Feder essays the glum, cheerless son. After they go their separate ways, though, things ignite when David Strathairn appears on the scene, instantly compelling my closer attention.
The official synopsis describes the film as “the story of an unlikely friendship between a young boy searching for his father in pool halls across the country, and a wandering loner hiding from his past. In each other they experience the power of a second chance, and a shot at redemption.”
So David Strathairn as a “wandering loner”? Yes, please.
Walkaway Joe is set for release on May 8, 2020, On Demand and Digital, as well as — hm, let me squint to read this — “theaters,” whatever those might be. While we build up anticipation, chalk up your pool cues and enjoy the trailer below.

Here is more information on David’s show INTERROGATION which premieres on CBS All Access on February 6, 2020.
CBS ALL ACCESS’ TRUE-CRIME SERIES “INTERROGATION” TO PREMIERE THURSDAY, FEB. 6
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Dec. 12, 2019 – CBS All Access today announced that its new original true-crime series, INTERROGATION, will be available to binge beginning Thursday, Feb. 6. The streaming service also released the series’ teaser art. With all episodes dropping at once, viewers will see the day of the crime and then follow the evidence like a cold case detective, abandon the linear narrative and determine their own investigative path by watching the episodes leading up to the finale in any order.
Starring Peter Sarsgaard (“The Looming Tower”), Kyle Gallner (“Outsiders”), David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck”), and special guest star Vincent D’Onofrio (“The Godfather of Harlem”), INTERROGATION is based on a case that spans more than 20 years, in which a young man was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. After being sentenced to life in prison, he continued to fight to prove his innocence. Each episode is structured around interrogations informed by real police case files. Sarsgaard plays David Russell, the lead detective on the case; Gallner plays the accused, Eric Fisher; Strathairn plays Eric’s father, Henry Fisher; and D’Onofrio plays Ian Lynch, an Internal Affairs officer who ends up becoming Eric Fisher’s biggest ally.
The series is produced by CBS Television Studios. Co-creators Anders Weidemann (“30 Degrees in February”) and John Mankiewicz (“House of Cards,” “Bosch”) serve as executive producers alongside Fabrik Entertainment’s Henrik Bastin (“Bosch”) and Melissa Aouate (“Hit the Road”). CBS All Access has released the first poster from David’s series INTERROGATION and his character’s name is finally revealed. David will play the part of Henry Russell, the father of the lead character played by Peter Sarsgaard. Funny enough, Sarsgaard’s character’s name is, wait for it ….. David Russell. David’s full name is David Russell Strathairn, and this isn’t the first time David has played someone with Russell in their character name. There was SIMON BIRCH where David played Reverend Russell, then BEYOND THE CALL where he played the part of Russell Cates, and finally HOME FROM THE HOLIDAYS where he played Russell Terziak. There seems to be a pattern forming. I’m wondering if the irony has hit David? Likely. Here’s the information on the series and the poster. Oh premiere date is February 6, 2020.
‘Interrogation’: Your First Look at Peter Sarsgaard’s True-Crime Series (PHOTO)
Meaghan Darwish December 12, 2019 12:45 pmCBS All Access is bulking up its originals with Interrogation, a true-crime series starring Peter Sarsgaard, Kyle Gallner, and David Strathairn, with guest star Vincent D’Onofrio.
Set to premiere Thursday, February 6 on the streaming platform, Interrogation will drop all of its episodes for viewers’ bingeing pleasure.
What makes this series unique is that while watching the episodes from start to finish will wind an investigative path to its conclusion, every installment between the premiere and finale can be watched in any order of the viewer’s choosing.
Along with the premiere date, a teaser poster has been revealed as well, featuring an interrogation scene from a birds-eye perspective. Based on a real case that spanned over 20 years, the show focuses on a man convicted of killing his mother.
After receiving a life sentence in prison, this man continued the fight to prove his innocence in the matter. Every episode itself is structured around interrogations that are inspired by real police case files.
Sarsgaard portrays lead detective David Russell and Gallner plays the accused criminal, Eric Fisher. Strathairn takes on the role of Eric’s father, Henry, and D’Onofrio guest star as Ian Lynch, an Internal Affairs officer who supports Eric’s fight to prove his innocence.
Produced by CBS Television Studios, Interrogation is co-created by Anders Weidemann and John Mankiewicz who also serve as executive producers. They’re joined by fellow executive producers Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate as well as Ernest Dickerson, who also directs six out of the 10 episodes. Patrick Cady is on board as a director.

There is a review on David’s film AN INTERVIEW WITH GOD where he plays a mysterious man by the name of ‘The Man’.
New-Release Tuesday: An Interview with God
Dec 10, 2019 | Arts/Entertainment
Past the Popcorn provides South King Media with exclusive reviews of Theatrical and Home Video entertainment. We aim to dig just a little deeper than the surface of what we watch.
I confess that I am a sucker for anything starring David Strathairn.
If your reaction to that is, “Who?” then you really should see some David Strathairn films. They are almost always small, thoughtful projects. Probably the most high-profile thing he has ever done is star opposite Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon in River Wild, and he looked pretty out of place in a Big Hollywood Thriller.
I also confess that I am a sucker for films with a theological bent. That’s natural, because I am a film critic who also happens to be a pastor.
But having spent a decade “servicing” the “Christian Film industry” as part of my editorial responsibilities, I also have a tremendously sensitive B.S. meter. That is, I can smell an “evangelical” film a mile away–you know, one of those holier-than-thou “I have the answers and you don’t, ha ha ha” lectures that are not really films at all but smug propaganda designed to guilt people into a loving relationship with Jesus. As if.
Well, An Interview with God is not one of those. And you really can’t know that until you see it. (And isn’t that a potent metaphor for faith?)
The trailer pretty much tells you all you need to know going in. A battlefront journalist sets up a short series of interviews with a man purporting to be God… and there are only so many places a story like this could go. Primarily: is this dude really God, or is this a put-on? Or a hallucination? The options narrow when you get an actor like Strathairn involved, and once you label the film “thoughtful.”
So… the film is thoughtful. It is sincere, and while it does not grapple with theology on the level of, say, Christopher Hitchens or Thomas Merton, the rubber does hit the road. Anybody who has devoted any amount of energy in the Big Questions of God and “purpose” or “meaning” will be on familiar ground with this film.
Both Strathairn and young Brenton Thwaites (who also has a solid industry resume behind him) do solid, interesting work here. The script and direction by indie filmmakers Ken Aguado and Perry Lang never stray into maudlin or ostentatious territory. All around, it’s clear that this is a project of passion–that all parties involved are seriously interested in the human condition and the implications of metaphysical inquiry.
If you are cruising around Netflix and wondering whether this is worth your time, all I can say is… go ahead and crank up your brain and your B.S. meter and settle in. As long as you aren’t expecting car crashes, Dwayne Johnson, Chris Rock, or Transformers, I think you’ll be glad you watched. It won’t answer any questions for you, and it doesn’t try to; but it will re-engage you with your questions in a meaningful and worthwhile way.
An Interview with God is included with your Netflix subscription. You can also find it at the other usual streaming sites for a small fee.

David has a film coming to Amazon Prime this week. It’s called FAST COLOR and he plays the part of Ellis, the sheriff of a small town. The film actually sounds a lot like ALPHAS with a woman with ‘special skills’ is on the run. Here’s more below plus a trailer.
Fast Color (2018)
Director: Julia Hart
Starring: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint, Saniyya Sidney, Christopher Denham, and David Strathairn
Release Date: Dec. 11If you like superhero movies but you want a break from DC and Marvel, you should consider checking out Fast Color. Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as a woman with supernatural abilities.
Her gift makes her a target for scientists and government officials who desire to test her and use her abilities for their own means. She’s forced on the run and on her journey meets several interesting people along the way.
This trailer came out a while ago while I was getting the site up and running. My apologies for its lateness. It seems David will be back as Klaes Ashford in the final season of THE EXPANSE. You’ll see him very briefly. The show returns December 13, 2019 on Amazon Prime.
David guest starred in three episodes from THE SOPRANOS fifth season as Robert Wegler, a teacher/counselor at Tony Jr.’s (Robert Iler) school. In his arc David appeared mainly with Carmela (Edie Falco) and largely most of the time naked. And excellent turn from David and enjoyable to watch.
Here are the screencaps from David’s performance as Ray McDeere in the late Sydney Pollack’s film THE FIRM also starring Tom Cruise, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, and Holly Hunter. This is one of my favourite roles of David’s. I love the quirky relationship with Holly Hunter who plays Tammy. The scene at the end with her and David on the dock is too cute. And David’s delivery is perfect.
The last (so far) of David’s episodes from the series BILLIONS where he plays Black Jack Foley.
David’s second season episodes of BILLIONS as Black Jack Foley. Enjoy.
I’ve finally been able to get David’s episodes from BILLIONS screencapped and edited to add to the gallery and press sections respectively. David has many scenes with actor Paul Giamatti who plays the character of Chuck Rhodes. Giamatti and David were also in the film COLD SOULS together. Please feel free to click on the links to go to the various sections.
This is probably one of David’s most colourful portrayals. As Pierce Moorehouse Pachett, David played a pornographer who had a knack for turning women into fake bombshells to create “art”. What was excellent in this film is that it captured Los Angeles’ Hollywood hey day at it’s most glamourous. The film also starred Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, Guy Pierce, and Kevin Spacey. All in all one of David’s best work. Though I think all of his films and television forays are usually exceptional because, well, it’s David Strathairn. Here are the screencaps and a clip with David’s parts from the film. Though not in the film a lot, he still left an indelible imprint. Enjoy.
I fell asleep as I was editing the clip and screencaps for David’s portrayal of District Attorney Joe Lobruto in the Gregory Hoblit directed film FRACTURE, starring Ryan Gosling, Rosamund Pike, and Sir Anthony Hopkins. I love this performance. The line where David says, “Head’s gotta roll,” is so funny. Funny in the way that he really doesn’t mean it because he keeps Gosling’s character of Willy Beachum still on the payroll. The clip is up in the media section and you can click on the images below to go there. The clip can be accessed via the link I’ll provide below.
In 1990 David was part of an ensemble cast in the historic film MEMPHIS BELLE. David played the part of Col. Craig Harriman, one of the commanders of the various air raids that took place over Germany from the combined British/American airforce. The Memphis Belle of the history books was a Boeing b-17 Flying Fortress that flew 25 combat missions before it was retired to return home to America. David’s character is a fictional rendering of some of the real life men who served. David is the emotional core of this film. With his stoic, no-nonsense manner, David shows his care for the men flying these dangerous missions. An excellent film all around. Click on the images below to get to the album.
I have been hard at work trying to get some other things added to the site I completely forgot we have a new layout! Not before it was time. Sorry I didn’t post this before but ya know, the aforementioned working hard thing. Yeah so enjoy.
Articles in this press library are backdated to the date and year of their publishing. Meaning if the date of the article was June 2, 2001, then it will be dated that in this press archive. Here is an early performance of David’s from 1985. David guest starred as Marty Lang on the NBC Miami-based show MIAMI VICE. David’s character is the partner of a former Vice cop who he helped cover up the murder of a drug dealer. A good performance from David so early in his career. I’ve been able to clip up the episode and can be found in the Media section of the site. Enjoy.
I know this is very late but I want to wish David a Happy Birthday. I hope he’s spending today with those he loves and is enjoying his day. He turns 68 today and I do truly hope he had a great day.
On this day I’d like to wish David the happiest of birthdays. David turns 68 years young. Here’s hoping he’s spending his day with his wife, Logan, and sons Tay and Ebbe and a ton of friends. Thank you David for your graciousness and your wonderful spirit. You are a treasure.
I found a wonderful interview with David and his longtime friend/collaborator John Sayles on the PBS show Charlie Rose from back in 1999. Here David and John discuss their latest film LIMBO where David played the part of “Jumpin” Joe Gastineau, and the benefits of working together for so long. The other films David and Sayles did together include EIGHT MEN OUT where he played the part of Eddie Cicotte, the pitcher of the infamous 1919 Black Sox scandal in baseball, MATEWAN where David played Sid Hatfield, PASSION FISH playing Rennie, BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET playing a Man in Black, RETURN OF THE SECAUCUS SEVEN playing Ron, and CITY OF HOPE playing Asteroid. Please enjoy and comment if you like.
I have David’s guest-starring role as Nash in the sixth season episode of the series HOUSE. Here David’s character was suffering from a terminal disease of the heart. The episode is pretty good as it pits David (always at his best) against Hugh Laurie as Dr. House. The episode was also the directorial debut for star Laurie.
With David’s work in THE BLACKLIST done, I’m about to start working on his two seasons on the Syfy show ALPHAS where he played the part of Dr. Lee Rosen. This might take me some time to do since I also have a site for his co-star in the series, Laura Mennell who played the part of the pusher Nina Theroux. I’ll be doing double duty and I also might be considering a site for their co-star Warren Christie who played the part of Cameron Hicks, the hyperkinetic. Please be patient. I’m also going to try to get David’s event images sorted, titled and into the gallery. I might intersperse his television work with some of his one-shot guest appearances, as well some of his films where he played a lesser part.
I have David’s episodes from seasons two and three where David played the part of The Director Peter Kotsiopulos. David met a rather ignominious end I would say.
SEASON THREE
DAVID STRATHAIRN ONLINE is a site dedicated to American-born actor David Strathairn. This site’s aim is to focus in on David’s career on stage, screen, television and any other medium David appears on including entertainment programs consisting of interviews, awards shows, talk shows, internet-based medium, and any other things concerning David’s career.
Photos of David arriving to events, arriving/leaving talk show appearances, behind the scenes of photoshoots, on the set and behind the scenes images.
Photos of David at the airport, shopping, walking down the street, getting coffee, or any other moment where David would believe his privacy would be expected. Respect your favorite celebrity’s privacy and do not ask for these to be posted and do not encourage other sites to post them either.
Photos of David arriving for public appearances and on the set of various projects are related to his work. A photo of him eating lunch (unless it happens to be during the filming of a scene), is not.
David was in the Gareth Edwards 2014 American-made GODZILLA film starring Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Elizabeth Olsen. He played the part of Admiral William Stenz, part of the constantly present military side that in the old Toho films trying to take out the big green titular anti-hero. Having been a big fan of the original Showa/Heisei/Millennium series, I was a bit doubtful as to whether this film was worthy of the name. I did like the 1998 Matthew Broderick film (though I know a lot of people don’t like it) but the one thing about this film that made it reasonable was David’s always present gravitas. I wasn’t that thrilled by the amount of screen time Godzilla didn’t have. It seemed Edwards and Legendary Pictures didn’t want us to get a good look at the big guy, and only utilized him in almost a sixteenth of the film considering the over three quarters the original Toho Series Godzilla often received. I know it’s a little sacrosanct to state something negative on a fansite, but again having been a fan of the original series since my first film back in 1969, I feel I have the amount of gravitas of my own to state that. However, considering the amount of screen time David didn’t have, I have to say that he brought his A-Game as usual.
As you can see I’ve created a new layout for the site. I’ve been seriously behind in everything and getting a fresh new look for all my sites are on the agenda. I’m planning on some major updating in terms of the gallery from some of David’s episodic television work including his work on ALPHAS as Dr. Lee Rosen, and from THE BLACKLIST as Peter Kotsiopulos. After that I’ll get to David’s film work, though there is some things up in the gallery already. So for now, thanks for your continued visiting and for your love of David.
Sorry for the lack of updates…again, but a ton of things going on in my life and I’m trying hard to get things updated on all my sites. Unfortunately best laid plans and all. I have for you some screencaps of David from the new GODZILLA American reboot. Still no word as to who David is playing, but by the looks of the trailer looks like he’s playing a military man. Who’d a thunk? I also will be giving the trailer from Youtube. Enjoy.
I know there has been a serious lack of updates considering David’s busy film and stage work but it’s been unavoidable. I will be having an update soon. Please stay tuned.
On behalf of PROTEUS, I want to wish David Strathairn the happiest of days. He turns a young 64 today. I hope he spends his day with his loved ones and has a rare glass of wine to celebrate. Happy Birthday David.

With the 11 Soul Urge, much of your thinking and interests relate to the abstract, the spiritual, and utopian dreams. You are motivated toward idealistic concepts, and the sharing of your ideas and concepts with humanity. If you possess the positive 11 Soul Urge traits, you have a dream of the perfect world; you are highly idealistic and inspirational. Your inner strength and devotion to your beliefs are extremely strong. You have a very good mind that is especially well equipped to handle the higher, more abstract forms of thought.

In some cases, these sensitivities and emotions are quite repressed, and this tends to add even more to the sense of nervousness in the makeup.
The strong 11 is not a very practical person because of the extreme idealism; often, there is a degree of self-deception present. There is usually a rather fixed idea of right and wrong held by those showing strong 11 traits, and with this very often is a resulting attitude of inflexibility.
Your Inner Dream number is: 11

Background:
“People, through no fault of their own, get pigeonholed. You can only be what people perceive you to be and I’m sure that at this stage of the game, I’m perceived as someone who can show up and do the job as a character actor, not the leading man.” David Strathairn
First noticed for playing supporting roles like baseball pitcher Eddie Cicotte in ”Eight Men Out” (1988) and Asteroid in the ”City of Hope” (1991), David Strathairn got his first starring role in film as the title character in the festival-screened drama ”Harrison’s Flowers” (2000) before eventually landing his biggest success in 2005 when he earned Oscar, Independent Spirit Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Best Actor for his portrayal of television journalist Edward R. Murrow in George Clooney’s “Good Night, and Good Luck.”
The actor, who frequently collaborates with film director John Sayles, made his debut in Sayles’ first film, ”The Return of the Secaucus 7” (1980), and has since appeared in many films with Sayles, including ”The Brother From Another Planet” (1984), ”Eight Men Out” (1988) and ”Passion Fish” (1992). His other projects include ”A League of Their Own” (1992), ”Sneakers” (1992), “The Firm” (1993), ”The River Wild” (1994), “Losing Isaiah” (1995), ”L.A. Confidential” (1997), ”The Notorious Bettie Page” (2005; starring Gretchen Mol), ”We Are Marshall” (2006; starring Matthew McConaughy), ”Fracture” (2007), and “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2007). He will soon star in the upcoming films “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “A Tale of Two Sisters,” and “Hereafter.”
Strathairn also appeared on Broadway in the revival of Anton Chekhov’s play “Three Sisters” (1997; with Calista Flockhart, Lili Taylor and Eric Stoltz), “The Dance of Death” (with Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren), and recently played John the Baptist in a staged reading of Oscar Wilde’s ”Salome” (with Al Pacino, Marisa Tomei, and Dainne Wiest).
On a more personal note, the actor currently lives in upstate New York with his wife Logan and their two children.
David Russell
Childhood and Family:
Born in San Francisco, California, on January 26, 1949, David Russell Strathairn was raised in the San Francisco Bay area. His father was a physician and he has two siblings, a brother named Tom who is a teacher, and a sister named Anne. He is of Scottish ancestry through his paternal grandfather, Thomas Scott Strathairn (a native of Crieff, Perthshire) and Native Hawaiian ancestry through his paternal grandmother, Lei.
Young Strathairn attended Redwood High School in Larkspur, California, and graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1970. While attending Williams College, he met fellow student and future director John Sayles, who would regularly cast Straithairn in his films. He studied at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College in Venice, Florida, and worked as a clown in a traveling circus before becoming an actor.
Strathairn now lives in upstate New York with his wife Logan, a nurse. They have two children, one of whom is musician and actor Tay Strathairn (born on October 31, 1980), who appeared in John Sayles’ “Eight Men Out” (1988) and “Lone Star” (1996). Strathairn also helped to start a children’s theater in Glen Falls, New York.
City of Hope
Career:
After graduating from Williams College, David Strathairn became a replacement clown for six months with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Afterward, he sharpened his acting skills while working in a summer theater company in New Hampshire where he befriended film director John Sayles. Sayles later cast Strathairn in his first feature, ”Return of the Secaucus Seven” (1980), a home movie of 1980 America about a group of friends who are reunited at a summer house in New Hampshire to reminisce about the good old days. The film received general positive reviews and won Best Screenplay at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards and Best Independent Film at the Boston Society of Film Critics Awards.
The following year, Strathairn made his stage debut in “Einstein and the Polar Bear” at Connecticut’s Hartford Stage and made his Off-Broadway debut in 1983 in the play “Blue Plate Special.” He then returned to the big screen as Wesley in Mike Nichols’ Oscar-nominated biopic “Silkwood” (1983; starring Meryl Streep), and teamed up again with John Sayles in Sayles’ thought-provoking cult classic, “The Brother From Another Planet” (1984).
After making his TV debut with a guest appearance in a 1985 episode of NBC’s popular and innovative detective series “Miami Vice,” Strathairn was cast as the morally upright Police Chief Sid Hatfield in Sayles’ Oscar-nominated historical drama about the coal miners’ strike in Matewan, West Virginia, in the 1920s, “Matewan” (1987; with Chris Cooper and James Earl Jones). He then offered a compelling interpretation of the morally flawed baseball pitcher Eddie Cicotte in Sayles’ dramatization “Eight Men Out” (1988), based on the 1963 book by Eliot Asinof, and portrayed the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer in CBS’s Emmy-winning made-for-TV drama “Day One” (1989; with Brian Dennehy, Hal Holbrook and Hume Cronyn). Meanwhile, he played the regular role of eccentric bookstore owner Moss Goodman (1988-1990) and the romantic interest for Blair Brown’s title role in the NBC/Lifetime comedy-drama “The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd.”
Strathairn next portrayed Asteroid in Sayles’ award-winning urban drama “City of Hope” and played the brain surgeon in HBO’s Golden Globe-winning biographical drama “Without Warning: The James Brady Story,” starring Beau Bridges. He appeared as a blind, brilliant computer hacker in Phil Alden Robinson’s caper film “Sneakers” (1992) with Robert Redford and played a dynamic adman in Penny Marshall’s fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) “A League of Their Own” (1992, starring Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, and Madonna) before delivering a rare romantic lead, opposite Mary McDonnell and Alfre Woodard, in Sayles’ Oscar-nominated “Passion Fish” (1992). Afterward, he portrayed Carl Linstrum, opposite Jessica Lange’s Alexandra, in the “Hallmark Hall of Fame” acclaimed production of the 1913 novel by Willa Cather, “O Pioneers” (CBS; 1992) and appeared as the young Arthur Huntington (Darren McGavin portrayed the older version) in the TNT adaptation of Arthur Miller’s stage play about 1930s America during The Great Depression, “The American Clock” (1993).
Strathairn continued to add to his resume as Tom Cruise’s jailbird brother in Sydney Pollack’s Oscar-nominated film adaptation of John Grisham’s legal thriller “The Firm” (1993), Meryl Streep’s husband in Curtis Hanson’s thriller film “The River Wild” (1994), and Jessica Lange’s husband in Stephen Gyllenhaal’s drama film based on the novel by Seth Margolis, “Losing Isaiah” (1995). Meanwhile, he returned to stage to star alongside Stockard Channing in the Lincoln Center production of Tom Stoppard’s espionage play, “Hapgood.”
In 1996, Strathairn co-starred with Nick Nolte in Keith Gordon’s film version of Kurt Vonnegut’s 1961 book, “Mother Night,” and appeared as the wealthy Pierce Patchett in Curtis Hanson’s Oscar-winning “L.A. Confidential.” His performance in the latter film earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast. That same year, he also received a CableACE nomination for Guest Actor in a Dramatic Special or Series for his role in the HBO movie directed by Christopher Reeve, “In the Gloaming” (1997).
Returning to stage, Strathairn joined the all-star cast of the Broadway revival of Anton Chekhov’s play, “Three Sisters” (1997) and spent the rest of the 1990s acting in front of the camera as the Reverend Russell in “Simon Birch” (1998) and Sigourney Weaver’s husband in the film version of Jane Hamilton’s 1994 novel, “A Map of the World” (1999). He also portrayed the role of Theseus in Michael Hoffman’s take of William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, ”A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1999), and teamed up again with Sayles to play a fisherman who romances Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in “Limbo”
Entering the new millennium, Strathairn portrayed Helen Keller’s father in the ABC TV remake of William Gibson’s classic play “The Miracle Worker” and was featured as the title role of a Pulitzer Prize-winning Newsweek photojournalist in the festival-screened drama “Harrison’s Flowers” (released theatrically in 2002). He then went back to stage in Craig Lucas’ play “Stranger” and returned to Broadway in support of Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren in “The Dance of Death.” Additionally, he played Ivanov in “Every Good Boy Deserves Favor” and played Leontes in “The Winter’s Tale.” He also appeared on Broadway as Jokhannan (John the Baptist) in a staged reading of Oscar Wilde’s ”Salome” (with Al Pacino, Marisa Tomei and Dainne Wiest), which was directed by Estelle Parsons, and appeared in the play “Hannah & Martin.”
Strathairn also had a regular role on the short-lived CBS cop drama “Big Apple” and played the lead role of an English teacher in the Sundance-screened “Blue Car” (2002). He then narrated the Philadelphia Orchestra’s rendition of Beethoven’s incidental music to Goethe’s “Egmont” in January 2004.
In 2005, Strathairn earned Oscar, Independent Spirit Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for Best Actor for his portrayal of television journalist Edward R. Murrow in George Clooney’s “Good Night, and Good Luck” and portrayed Estes Kefauver in the HBO original film “The Notorious Bettie Page” (2006). He then co-starred as the district attorney, opposite Anthony Hopkins, in Gregory Hoblit’s suspense film “Fracture” (2007). Recently, he co-starred with Norah Jones, Jude Law, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman in Hong Kong film director Wong Kar Wai’s first film in English, “My Blueberry Nights” (2007) and played CIA Deputy Director Noah Vosen in “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2007).
Strathairn has wrapped up an upcoming movie titled “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” in which he will portray Arthur Spiderwick. He is currently filming “A Tale of Two Sisters,” the Guard brothers’ horror/thriller based on a classic Korean folk tale, and “Hereafter,” a drama by writer/director Michael Patwin in which Strathairn will star as an American businessman who walks barefoot for 70 miles to find his wife and children in the wake of a catastrophic tsunami in Asia.
Strathairn won an Emmy for Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role for his work in the 2010 HBO biopic “Temple Grandin” with Claire Danes. Then was nominated a second time for “Hemingway & Gellhorn.”In 2011, Strathairn took on the role of Dr. Lee Rosen, the leader of the exceptional team of people known as “Alphas” for the SyFy channel. He also reprised his role of CIA Deputy Director Noah Vosen in the sequel to “The Bourne Ultimatum” known as “The Bourne Legacy” (2012). Also in 2012, Strathairn took on the role of Secretary of State William Seward in the Steven Spielberg biopic “Lincoln” starring Daniel Day Lewis. Strathairn also opened in “The Heiress” starring Jessica Chastain in October 2012.
Best wishes to David on Sunday night’s 64th Annual Emmy Awards. He is up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his role as John Des Pasos for HBO’s HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN. Here’s hoping for the repeat though David’s up against some stiff competition in Ed Harris for Game Change and Denis O’Hare for American Horror Story. Both are solid actors and given David has already won for TEMPLE GRANDIN…. Fingers crossed David.

A: No, I am not David Strathairn. I am just a resource for his films, television work, …etc.
A: No, I don’t know how to contact David.
A: No. What do they mean to anyone outside of this site? They’ve been created for the explicit purpose of staying on this site and this site alone. Headers on both the main site and the gallery are not available for use.
A: Yes, certainly. No credit needs to be given in this case since you’ll be using the images for your own creations, however, if you’d like to give a shout out to this site, that would be appreciated.
A: Yes, however, don’t say you did it yourself. A lot of work has gone into creating this site as well as the amount of time it takes to screencap each episode of television work and or film. On average it takes about two to three hours depending on the work. I am providing these images for you free of charge, but not free to take and say it’s yours. Please credit back to this site if you’re posting to any message board. Convenient copy and paste codes are available below each image in the gallery for your convenience and it automatically opens the larger image on click. Please be considerate.
A: No! Hotlinking is not allowed on this site. In fact the webhosting service I use has provided a means by which I can turn off the ability to hotlink…and I have. So don’t do it.
A: Hotlinking is a way that someone right clicks on an image and choses the Properties dialogue to find out the filename. The person then copies that URL and then puts it on their own webpage but not on a webhost service or a photo storage site such as Photobucket, Imageshare, Picasa, or Flickr. When someone visits the page you have copied the URL into, that clicks as a visit on my site therefore it becomes part of my bandwidth that I pay for. So don’t do it.
A: Bandwidth is what I pay for on Bravehost services. It is the method that happens when a person clicks onto this site from a search engine or link on another website.

This site came about due to the excellence of one man. That man is David Strathairn. There was another site online for the longest time, run by another fan of David’s. The webmaster of that site decided to shut her site down due to other issues in her life so there was left a void. My reason for starting this space was because I felt David Strathairn deserved a space of his own, someplace for people to come and explore who the man was over and above the various other pages like IMDB and others that just small bits of information. It’s my hope that you’ll come to know David though I’m sure a lot of you may already know him through his role of Dr. Lee Rosen on the SyFy hit series ALPHAS. The name Proteus is defined as thus: Protues [ proh-tee-uhs]
— noun
Certainly it is not the third definition I was thinking of, however, David is one of those rare actors that no matter what role he’s in, he is still able to change his form as it were to create an unique and different animal each time out of the gate. Though through each and every individual performance he has the ability to display subtle aspects of the character that in the hands of other actors would seem showy. But not David. So I decided that David needed a presence so I initially set the site up under a dubdomain of my Samskara.org domain and created the designs for both the main site and gallery. I then bought the domain of davidstrathairn.org and uploaded all files necessary to create this site here.

One of the rights accorded to the owner of copyright is the right to reproduce or to authorize others to reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords. This right is subject to certain limitations found in sections 107 through 118 of the copyright law (title 17, U. S. Code). One of the more important limitations is the doctrine of “fair use.” The doctrine of fair use has developed through a substantial number of court decisions over the years and has been codified in section 107 of the copyright law.
Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered fair, such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:
The 1961 Report of the Register of Copyrights on the General Revision of the U.S. Copyright Law cites examples of activities that courts have regarded as fair use: “quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment; quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author’s observations; use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied; summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report; reproduction by a library of a portion of a work to replace part of a damaged copy; reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson; reproduction of a work in legislative or judicial proceedings or reports; incidental and fortuitous reproduction, in a newsreel or broadcast, of a work located in the scene of an event being reported.”
Copyright protects the particular way authors have expressed themselves. It does not extend to any ideas, systems, or factual information conveyed in a work.
The safest course is always to get permission from the copyright owner before using copyrighted material. The Copyright Office cannot give this permission.
When it is impracticable to obtain permission, use of copyrighted material should be avoided unless the doctrine of fair use would clearly apply to the situation. The Copyright Office can neither determine if a certain use may be considered fair nor advise on possible copyright violations. If there is any doubt, it is advisable to consult an attorney.
